Mater Hospital redevelopment project wins multiple awards

15/12/2010

The Mater Hospital Newcastle redevelopment project has picked up another National award for construction company Abigroup Contractors. The alternative central energy plant design, designed and installed by Haden Engineering, was given special mention. Haden's expertise in the Health sector deepens in the development of energy efficient health industry facilities.

Abigroup Contractors was recently awarded the Master Builders Association’s national building award in the “National Public Buildings over $50 million” category. The award follows the project’s success at the NSW MBA State awards which were held in Sydney on 6th November 2010, where the Mater Hospital won an Excellence in Construction award in Health Buildings over $150 million category. The alternative central energy plant design, designed and installed by Haden Engineering, was given special mention by the judges.

This Mater redevelopment was the first hospital project to be developed under a Public Private Partnership with the NSW Government.

The project, which was undertaken over 3 ½ years with the existing hospital fully operation throughout the full duration of the project, included the redevelopment of the 180 bed Newcastle Mater Hospital, provision of a new 96 bed acute mental health facility, and expanded radiotherapy services.

Haden Engineering was contracted to provide the design and installation of HVAC and Mechanical Services for the entire redevelopment project.

“Haden’s engineering team took a collaborative approach to the design phase of this PPP project, actively working with the design consultants at each stage to maximise the energy and cost efficiency of the installation,” explained Mark Williamson, General Manager Haden Construction. “This included using a central energy plant design, variable speed high efficiency chillers, cooling towers, fans and pumps, all selected for their ability to improve energy efficiency.”

Haden’s expertise in the Health sector continues to deepen with the recent completion of the mechanical services on the Hedland Regional Health Resource Centre, in Port Hedland, the latest in a growing number of projects involving the development of energy efficient health industry facilities.

This MBA award is the latest in string of awards for the Mater Hospital project, including the:
